Recently the Kentucky School Boards Association presented the Letcher County Public School District with their highest award, the Public Education Achieves in Kentucky Award, in recognition of the district piano program.
I’ve watched in amazement how much students can learn when they are having fun. Music is fun and a gift that follows you throughout life.
The Whitesburg High School Alumni appreciated their gift of music from teachers like Hugh Adams, Ruth Tolliver, Rosa Jones, Lucille Crawford, Jacquline Combs Owens, Jeanette Lewis, Jack Taylor and others. This group wanted to promote music education in Letcher County and in 2009 a Steinway piano was delivered to Letcher County Central High School from the Ron Gist Piano Company of Louisville. Then the WHS Alumni partnered with the Letcher County Education Foundation to purchase keyboards ( piano labs) for all seven elementary schools. The result of all these efforts culminated in weekly professional piano lab instruction of 500 elementary students in all seven district schools.
This is an achievement we can all be proud to say we had a part and that the ‘can-do’ spirit is still alive in Letcher Countians everywhere. This kind of leadership from local administrators, Letcher County School Board of Education and the community makes me very proud to have received my music education in Letcher County.
