Public comment extended on power plant in Wise County

The public will have more time to comment on Dominion’s proposed coal-fired power plant in southwest Virginia.

The Department of Environmental Quality has added a second public hearing and extended the public comment period on the plant.

The department has scheduled a hearing in Richmond on February 19. And along with the originally scheduled hearing in Wise County on February 11, comment also will be heard February 12. The deadline for comment also has been extended until March 12.

Opponents had asked for more time to comment on the plant’s air emissions.

A draft DEQ permit would allow the plant to emit 5.3 million tons of carbon dioxide and 12,500 tons of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide into the air every year.

Dominion has said it will use technology for cleaner burning of coal.
