Rail crossing to close

A CSX railroad crossing on KY 7 near Deane at the Knott/ Letcher County line will be closed for repairs on Wednesday, July 23.

The road will be closed from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., according to Jay Rutherford, CSX’s Appalachian Division Roadmaster for Floyd, Knott, Letcher, and Perry counties.

“This crossing has been in bad shape for so long,” Rutherford said. “After we finish our work, people should have a smooth, safe, and much easier crossing to travel. For one thing, we plan to bring the track up about six inches, closer to the roadway surface.”

Highway District 12’s maintenance workers will provide traffic control message boards, signs, and flaggers as well as asphalt and paving once the work is finished.

Matt Moore, Maintenance Engineer for Knott and Letcher counties, explained that base material will be spread by the railroad on July 23.

“We will wait about a week to come back in a pave the crossing, to give the base time to settle according to the traffic on the road.” The paving work will not involve closing the road, Moore said, just a few brief delays. “We plan to do this work about July 29, weather permitting.”
