Rain for May already twice normal average

Letcher County has already received twice the normal amount of rainfall for May.

Dave Harbage, senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said Letcher County received four inches of rain during the first 11 days of May. The county normally receives two inches of rain for the entire month.

The good new is that Letcher County is no longer in a drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor configured by the National Data Climate Center.

“That’s about as accurate as we can get,” Harbage said of the monitor.

Letcher County finished 2008 with 32.77 inches of rainfall, 10 inches short of normal.

According to Harbage, much of Letcher County received an inch of rain between 8 a.m. on May 8 and 8 a.m. on May 9.

“The fact that (Letcher County) has double the amount of rainfall for this month is a good sign,” said Harbage.
