“BirdieStock”, a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, will be held Saturday, May 7, at Wiley’s Last Resort on US 119 on top of Pine Mountain near Whitesburg.
“There will be speechifying, orating, hot air and just a real good time,” said Jim Webb, owner of Wiley’s Last Resort.
The event is named in honor of a bird landing on a podium while Sanders spoke at a rally in Portland, Ore. on March 25.
The state director of Sanders’s campaign and the head of Sanders’s Pikeville headquarters are expected to attend the rally, which is scheduled to start at noon.
Bands set to play include Restless Leg String Band, Moonshine District, WV Hill, Part of the Problem, Giant Rooster Sideshow, Luna & the Mountain Jets, Hippies Killed the Grass and Old Regulars.
“It’s going to be a real friendly gathering of folks who care about the future of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia as well as the nation,” said Webb. “It will be an opportunity to exchange ideas and meet folks. It will also be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of great music, hiking and camping. Concessions will be available.”
The kid friendly event will include art by Jenn Hesh, magic by Dana Fleming and fire performances by Appalachian Fire Swarpers.
Sanders’s campaign signs will be available in addition to making signs at the rally.
