Rare deer spotted on Pine Mountain

A passerby on U.S. 119 near Whitesburg caught this image of two whitetail bucks preparing to cross the road over Pine Mountain. The deer at the top of the photo is a piebald with mostly white hair and a few brown spots. Only two percent of all whitetail deer are piebald. “Piebalds are rare so it’s considered very blessed to see one,” said Trish Leon of Wise County, Va., who took the photo while driving across the mountain with a friend from Whitesburg. “They symbolize spiritual renewal.” (Photo by Trish Leon)
