There will be a Bible School at Little Cowan Church on May 7 through 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome.

Kevin and Melissa Rayburn were in Letcher County for their honeymoon. They drove across the Little Shepherd Trail and enjoyed the scenery and wildlife. They also went on an elk tour.

Monday, Kevin cooked dinner for his aunts, Linda and Carol. They enjoyed his cooking and getting acquainted with Melissa. Of course they always enjoy time spent with their nephew, Kevin.

Duane and Anna Yonts have a new great-granddaughter. Congratulations to Tasha and Jimmy Brown on the birth of their beautiful daughter, Jaydence Riley Brown, on April 24.

Edwin Caudill of Abingdon was visiting on Cowan this past week.

I have enjoyed reading Ella Preston’s life story. I am so blessed to have shared a little of her history. She was my teacher the first four years of my schooling.

I am glad I got my education before the days of consolidation, electronics and all that modern stuff. I am sure kids nowadays know many more facts and have more skills, but I had a teacher who was a known and trusted neighbor, classmates who were friends and playmates. It was safe, comfortable, and interesting place to be. The teacher respected every child, and every child respected her and each other. We knew nothing of cliques, bullies, or boredom.

Ella instilled in us a love for learning that lasted a lifetime. She saw to it that we had fun too, with every occasion being cause for celebration with programs, parties, etc. And I remember that amazing, fascinating accordion.
