Funeral services for Raymond “Ray” Nichols, 70, were held September 30 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Johnson Cemetery at Cody.
Born in Galigar, W.Va., he was a son of the late Ona Ray and Estella Shamblin Nichols. He was a brother of the late Evelyn Keller and Donald Nichols, and the father of the late Anthony Wayne Nichols and Christopher Ray Adams.
He died September 27 in Hazard.
He was one of the first dirt track racecar drivers at Mountain Motor Speedway, and was a mechanic. After his retirement, he enjoyed watching his son, Raymond Mark, race.
Surviving are a son, Raymond Mark Nichols and wife Monae of Jeremiah; a daughter, Katherine Sue Evans and husband Tony of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Wesley, Christopher, Emilee, Rayma, Carlie and Nigel; nine brothers and sisters, Lillian Bailey of Williamstown, Virgie Koch of Cleveland, Ohio, Patricia Ann Conway of Oregon, Hilda Faye Tabor, Arnold Nichols and George Nichols, all of New York, and Lalmer Nichols, Michael Nichols and David Nichols, all of West Virginia; his former wife, Margaret Sue Nichols of Isom; and a friend, Shirley Kirby and her three grandsons, Michael, Tommy and Jeremiah, of Irvine.
