Reader’s Digest has named Whitesburg as one of the “25 Most Stunning Mountain Towns in America.” The list also includes well-known travel destinations such as Aspen, Colorado, Park City, Utah, Sun Valley, Idaho, and Asheville, North Carolina.
“ From Asheville to Whitesburg, these alpine escapes around the United States are utterly enchanting,” says the report in the magazine’s travel section.
Under a photograph of the Eolia side of Pine Mountain, Reader’s Digest writes, “Kentucky conjures images of horse races, bourbon, and basketball. Flipping the script? Whitesburg, a former coal-mining enclave with a thriving arts scene. Recently, the once downtrodden locale has seen a wave of new bars, studios, and live music venues. Travelers looking to commune with nature should head to Pine Mountain.”
Besides Whitesburg and Asheville, North Carolina, the other mountain towns included in the feature are (in order of appearance):
Asheville, North Carolina; Dahlonega, Georgia; Townsend, Tennessee; Mentone, Alabama; Bottineau, North Dakota; Thompsonville, Michigan; Whitesburg, Kentucky; Cluster, South Dakota; Sun Valley, Idaho; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Bend, Oregon; and Darby, Montana.
Also, Aspen, Colorado; Flagstaff, Arizona; Park City, Utah; Telluride, Colorado; Woodstock, New York; Carrabassett Valley, Maine; North Conway, New Hampshire; Ligonier, Pennsylvania; Fish Camp, California; Truckee, California; Idyllwild, California; South Lake Tahoe, California; and Cordova, Alaska.
