An exhibit reception celebrating the artwork of Robin Goree, the Appalshop Gallery’s artist for September and October, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, at Appalshop in Whitesburg. The event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served and the artist will be in attendance.
A resident of Virginia since 2000, Goree is originally from central Wisconsin, where she was graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a degree in English and journalism. She was graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1990, and worked as an environmental attorney for the Lake Superior Chippewa tribes. Later she practiced as a solo criminal defense lawyer until illness cut short her law career.
While recovering, Goree taught herself to paint and threw her energy into mastering acrylic painting. Her unique, powerful work has been seen around the world from Cairo to Kathmandu to Whitesburg.
