Relay for Life raises record $102,183 here

Letcher County residents helped raise more than $100,000 during a Relay for Life event held here to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“To reach $100,000 in Letcher County is phenomenal but to reach it when the economy is in the shape it is in to me is just the icing on the cake,” said Alberta Perry, chairperson for the Letcher County Relay for Life Committee. “I knew we would reach it eventually but never thought it would be this year.”

Money is raised during the year through various fund-raisers including bake sales, golf scrambles and raffles. Participants also had the opportunity to raise money by having people put in “jail,” forcing them to donate “bond” money. Also used to raise money were a purple toilet and a purple cow which were placed in front of yards and businesses.

According to Perry, the June 5 event at River Park in Whitesburg raised $102,182.88. Last year, $69,817 was raised.

Perry said 30 teams participated in raising money to find a cure for cancer.

Employees of Childers Oil Company and Pine Mountain Grill raised an eventhigh $8,820.76. Whitaker Bank raised $8,551.69 and Wal-Mart raised $8,009.

Cecelia Deatherage, of Jenkins, turned in $849, the most raised by an individual.

Perry said Letcher County has been the only Kentucky county served by the Ashland area to reach its goal this year.

Perry said this is the first year that Letcher County will receive services from two programs from the American Cancer Society.

The “Reach to Recovery” program pairs breast cancer survivors with newlydiagnosed breast cancer patients to provide support and comfort through their battle with cancer.

The “Look Good, Feel Good” program helps cancer patients who have lost their hair receive wigs and turbans. Members of the program also receive a free makeup kit and meet with a licensed cosmetologist once a month.

Perry said the program will begin as soon as licensed cosmetologists are trained. To volunteer for this program or to receive these services call Perry at 855- 7962.
