Rev. Wendell Bates dies at 70

Funeral services for the Rev. Wendell M. Bates, 70, were held August 12 at Bill Moore Branch Holiness Church at Kona. Burial was in the Bill Moore Branch Cemetery at Kona.

A son of the late Mack McCoy Bates and Inis Holbrook, he was the widower of Billie Joyce Craft Bates. He died August 8 in Whitesburg.

Rev. Bates was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam war. He was the pastor and founder of the Bill Moore Branch Holiness Church, and enjoyed going to church and preaching.

Surviving are three daughters, Jennifer Bryant and husband Jeremy of McRoberts, Wendy Stines and husband Bobby of Whitesburg, and Robin Smith and husband Zach of Isom; three sons, Wendell Bates, Jr. of Whitesburg, Jason Bates and wife Danielle of Thornton, and Jesse Bates and wife Kandi of Hazard; a brother, Harold Dean Bates of London; a sister, Vivian McKiddy of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
