Rites are held for Mary Lou Bartley




Former Jenkins resident Mary Lou Bartley, 82, died June 15 in Lexington.

A daughter of the late Lawrence and Ethel Webb Bartley, and stepdaughter of Nina Bartley, she was the granddaughter of The Mountain Eagle founder N. M. Webb and Ellen Williams Webb. She was a sister of the late Jackie Bartley Powers.

She was graduated from Jenkins High School, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, and a master’s of education from the University of Illinois.

She was a journalist, and worked in advertising and marketing, fund development, and as a political activism/ lobbyist and teacher.

She had served as state administrator of the Ground Observer Corps, was a delegate to a Democratic National Convention, and was a civil rights activist who had marched with Martin Luther King Jr.

Surviving are four sons, Michael Wanchic and wife Laura, and John Wanchic and wife Cecila of Bloomington, Ind., Mark Wanchic and wife Sherry of Georgetown, and Tom Wanchic of Florida; a daughter, Nina Wanchic Eisner and husband Robert of Lexington; 11 grandchildren, Faye, Noelle, Christa, Robert, Nicholas, John, Sarah, Michael, Jacob, Lucas and Lilah; and brother-inlaw, David Powers of Lexington.

Burial was in the Williams Cemetery at Pine Mountain Junction.
