Rites held for Charles Depriest




Charles Samuel “Sam” Depriest, 76, died December 12 at his home in Jenkins.

Born in Burdine to the late Carl Roy and Velva Shook Depriest, he was a brother of the late John Depriest.

Mr. Depriest was a coal miner for many years for Bethlehem Steel and for Sunglow for several years before he retired. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Hanau, Germany.

He was a member of the Burdine Freewill Baptist Church, the Jenkins American Legion Post 66 and the United Mine Workers of America.

Surviving are his wife, Vivian Lowe Depriest; two sons, Todd Samuel Depriest, and Donald Clayton Depriest and wife Catherine, all of Jenkins; four grandchildren, Allison, Katie, Jesse and Clay; a sister, Alice Stallard and husband Jim, of Jenkins; and two brothers, Jack Depriest and wife Audrey of Bristol, Va., and Joe Depriest and wife Brenda, of Jenkins.

Funeral services were held December 15 at the Burdine Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in the Jenkins-Payne Gap Cemetery.
