Rites held for Robert Sammons



Funeral services for Robert Glen Sammons, 58, were held July 25 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Dixon Cemetery at Jeremiah.

The son of the late Jewel Glen Sammons and Imogene Smith Sammons, he died July 21 at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mr. Sammons was an avid sports fan from his youth on upward. He especially enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds baseball team of the 1970’s known as the Big Red Machine.

Later in life he wanted to be baptized as his other family members were, but due to health issues he couldn’t.

He was preceded in death by uncles, James Jr., Willie Dean, Leroy, Henry and Jake Smith; aunts, Christine Cornett and Florene Back; cousins, James Michael Back and Anthony Smith; and a sister-in-law, Jonnie Wright.

Surviving are his wife, Mona Sammons; two sons, Robert Jonathan Sammons and Madison Heath Sammons; an uncle, Homer Smith and wife Ruth of, Jeremiah; an aunt, Illia Smith of Jeremiah; three sistersin law, Lawana Thornsberry and husband Marvin, Martha Amburgey of Mallie, and Betty Thornsberry and husband Leo of Raven; a brother-in-law, Alonzo Amburgey of Hazard; and two family members that he considered his real brothers, Marvin Thornsberry and Philip Smith and wife Marty.
