River cleanup delayed

A volunteer effort to help clean up the headwaters of the North Fork of the Kentucky River is being delayed for another month.

Letcher County’s first-ever participation in the annual River Sweep cleanup campaign will now take place on Saturday, August 29. The event’s local sponsor, Childers Oil Company of Whitesburg, was forced to postpone the cleanup scheduled for July 25 because of uncertainty over conflicting weather reports, some of which are calling for heavy rains over the weekend.

River Sweep, which is in its 20th year, originally was scheduled to take place in mid-June, but flooding which occurred then had caused the Kentucky River portion event to be postponed until this weekend.

Childers Oil executive Missy Matthews said public officials and other organizations associated with the event were concerned that heavy thunderstorms predicted for the rest of this week would hurt volunteer turnout.

“We want it to be as successful as possible,” said Matthews.

Matthews said that when the event does take place in August, work will be focused on the areas of Neon which were damaged by the June flood.

“We have to have it done by Neon Days,” she said, referring to the town’s annual celebration in early September.

Matthews said volunteers who have trucks available to haul debris are still being recruited.
