Riverside Days set for this week

Riverside Days, a free three-day festival, will be held this Thursday through Saturday, August 13-15, at Riverside Park in Whitesburg.

The festival’s featured event is country star David Lee Murphy on Saturday night. Murphy’s hits include “Dust On The Bottle,” “Party Crowd,” and “Loco,” among others. Opening for Murphy is Nashville recording artist Kate Sansing, who will play with the Neon-based AfterShock band. Both performers are sponsored by Coca-Cola and the City of Whitesburg.

Other notable events include a rubber duck race, sponsored by the Whitesburg Fire Department ; a mixture of rock, country, gospel and bluegrass performances; Letcher County Central High School’s dance team; and the Mountain Outreach Idol competition, sponsored by Mountain Outreach and Vernon Hall. The idol competition will be held nightly with eliminations. Contestants are Nicole Pennington of Pikeville, Heather Johnson of McRoberts, Anessa Gibson of Pound, Va., Joyce Wagner of Mayking, and Chantal Toler of Jackhorn.
