A 25-year-old man who robbed a Whitesburg motel was sentenced recently to 12 years in prison.
Letcher Circuit Judge Sam Wright followed a jury’s recommendation and sentenced Mark Joseph Morton, of 95 Bicycle Lane, Whitesburg, to serve 12 years in prison for robbing the Super 8 Motel at knifepoint last Dec. 16.
Morton was found guilty in August of first-degree robbery and intimidating a participant in the legal process. A jury recommended that Morton serve 10 years for robbery and two years for intimidating a witness, with the charges to run consecutively.
Assistant Whitesburg Police Chief Tyrone Fields testified during the two-day trial that Morton, while wearing a full-face toboggan, held a butcher’s knife to the throat of a Super 8 desk clerk and demanded money. Fields said Morton told the desk clerk if he called the police he would come back and kill him.
An estimated $ 553.73 was taken.
