Robert Mullins Jr. dies in accident




Robert Ray Mullins Jr., 30, died February 5 in Hickory from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a former sportswriter for the Norton Press, and a U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours of duty in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division. He was also a member of the Kentucky Army National Guard and was employed by the Kentucky Department of Military Affairs as a security guard on a National Guard base in Greenville.

He was a grandson of the late Joseph R. Mullins, Joseph Wilson, and Thelma Bateman Hampton, a nephew of the late Nancy Nadine Hampton, and a stepson of the late Gregory S. Davis.

Surviving are a son, Taylor Joseph Ray Mullins, Oak Grove; his father, Robert R. Mullins and wife Ruth, Whitesburg; his mother, Mary Hampton Davis, Norton, Va.; a brother, Joseph S. Mullins and wife Tonja, Wise, Va.; his grandmother and step-grandfather, Velva Mullins and husband Bill, Wise, Va.; two stepbrothers, Duane and Chris; and two stepsisters, Amy and Michele.

Funeral services were held February 9 in Wise, Va. Burial was in the Mullins Cemetery at Wise.
