Rotary brings reading program to Whitesburg

The Rotary Club of Whitesburg implemented the childhood literacy program of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Whitesburg, where registered children will receive a free book each month until they turn 5 years old.

The kickoff was held on January 26 at the new Letcher County Recreational Center in Whitesburg. Over 200 parents, grandparents and children turned out for the event. The first 50 children to register received a free book “ The Little Engine That Could”, and over 50 were registered to receive books.

To be eligible for this program, children must be under 5 years of age and live in the service area (mailing address and 911 address being Whitesburg, KY 41858). The Rotary Club hopes to bring in all children in Letcher County into this program in the future.

Parents of children who did not get to sign up at the event, are under 5 years of age, and live in the service area, may do so by contacting any member of the Rotary Club, or by picking up a brochure/ application at one of the following locations: Community Trust Bank, Whitaker Bank, Dr. Bill Collins’s office, Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation, Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, and Crawford Engineering.
