The Letcher County Relay for Life team, the Cancer Crusaders, will host the Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 11. The event will promote health and wellness in the community and breast cancer awareness education, and serve as a fundraiser for the Letcher County Relay for Life/American Cancer Society.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. It is the second leading cause of death among women, and each year it is estimated that more than 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.
Registration for the Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Oct. 11, at Fishpond Lake at Payne Gap. The run will begin at 9 a.m. The cost for the run is $25 for single participants and $20 each for groups of six or more. All proceeds will benefit the Relay for Life.
Registration forms are also available from Doris Banks at Food City, Icing on the Cake, Matilda Parks or Stefanie Adams at Dairy Queen, or the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital physical therapy department.
Sponsors for the event are Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation, Mother Nature Water, Four Square Produce, Sheriff Danny Webb and RoadID. com. For more information, call Melissa Parks at (606) 634-1262 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
