Cumberland River Coal Company’s Blue Ridge No. 1 Mine is the winner of a 2009 underground mining safety award given by the Kentucky Coal Association and the Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing. The awards honor the year’s best safety records in mines in each of the state’s six districts. The Blue Ridge No. 1 Mine is located near Eolia and employs 40 people. There is one active section and continuous miners and shuttle cars are used to mine coal from the 45-inch Taggard/C coal seam.
