Sale of alcohol will be allowed on election day

Lawmakers in Kentucky have passed legislation lifting a Prohibition era ban on the sale of alcohol at restaurants, bars and retail stores on Election Day.

The House and Senate voted overwhelmingly late Tuesday to allow alcohol sales during hours that polls are open. The measure, which contained a handful of other alcohol provisions, now goes to Gov. Steve Beshear for consideration.

Kentucky and South Carolina are the only two states that have such bans in place. In the past five years, similar bans have been lifted in Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Utah and West Virginia.

Similar measures had failed in past years in the Kentucky Legislature.

The legislation is Senate Bill 13.
