Santa, reindeer, elves come to Hemphill

Hi again everyone. Today is Sunday, Dec. 12, and I am watching it snow outside. I hope the weatherman is wrong about the forecast. I sure hate to see possibly 12 inches of snow this week. But we can’t stop it, so everyone try to prepare for it.

I had the most wonderful surprise of my life last weekend. I opened my door to a Santa, two little reindeer, and several elves standing on my back porch.

I had a very hard Thanksgiving, the first without my wonderful husband Jimmy, who died suddenly in April. My family from here, Pekin, Ind., and Louisville were all in on a surprise for me to cheer me up for the holidays. We had such a wonderful weekend together. I am so very blessed with such a large, loving family. They have really helped me through a lot of hard times. My vacuum cleaner had torn up and they bought me a new one. There it was with a big bow on top. I was so happy and excited that I even hugged the vacuum. They even brought all the food and also some Christmas crafts for us to make for the weekend.

I couldn’t ask for a better family. I love all of you and I am very surprised that they kept it a secret for so long. I know that was hard for some of them.

The community center at Hemphill had a dinner for Neon City Hall and the Police Department last week. They all seemed to enjoy their dinner. Suzy Polis gave the water department keys to two new trucks to use. From the way she talked, the trucks were very badly needed. The old ones are so old. Then there were drawings for several gift certificates.

Will Conley will be giving a hunters’ training course. This will be a threeday class at the Hemphill Community Center for children 9 years old and up, Feb. 17 and 18. The classes will be from 6 to 9 p.m. The shooting course will be Saturday, Feb. 19, at 9 a.m. For more information, call (606) 633-5012.

The center will be hosting a Christmas dinner for the Neon Fire Department this week, and we have a yummy menu planned. We have had a request for shucky beans and are trying to locate some.

Congratulations to Amber Osborn Noe, formerly of Hemphill and a daughter of Tara Baker of Jackhorn and David Osborn of Pound Va. She is a granddaughter of Yvonne Bentley and the late Kenneth Bentley. She bagged a huge buck while hunting She is married to Adam Noe, and they just bought a home in Shepherdsville. Both are avid deer hunters. Amber loves spending time in the woods.

We had our Breakfast with Santa at the center on the 4th, and it was a success. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. We sold chances on a Kentucky Quilt and the winner was Suzy Polis of Neon. Congratulations, Suzy. The older people say the first time that you sleep under a new quilt, whatever dream you have will come true. So sweet dreams, Suzy.

Belated happy birthday wishes to my brother, Jessie Fleming of Pekin, Ind. I hope you had a great day on your birthday.

I hope everyone stays warm and cozy during the cold weather this week. If you know someone who lives alone, please check on them. Take care of your pets and keep them warm and safe.

Hopefully I will have another article for you next week. May God bless and keep you safe.
