Sara Ruth Shackleford succumbs at 87


Funeral services for Sara Ruth Shackleford, 87, were held July 22 at Everidge Funeral Home. Burial was in the Edward P. Day Cemetery at Cowan.

A daughter of the late John D. and Alta Adams Hampton, she was born in Dongola. She died July 19 at the Brandenburg Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Brandenburg.

Mrs. Shackleford was a member of the Cowan Homemakers Club and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Carroll H. Shackleford; a son, Jonathan Shackleford; a grandson, Oliver F. Shortt; three sisters, Tilda Robinson, Edith Caudill and Melrina Profitt; and three brothers, Edward “Ed”, Garland and Kirby Hampton.

Sur viving are three daughters, Barbara S. Hughes of Cowan, Debra R. Shackleford of Ermine, and Kathryn Thissen and husband James of Vine Grove; two sons, Dr. Donald Shackleford and wife Mary Rose of Louisville, and Ronald C. Shackleford of Cowan; a brother, John Hampton and wife Helen of Idaho; eight grandchildren, Drew and Stephen Shackleford, Sara Slone and husband Patrick, Mary Pike and husband Neil, Jolene Rethwisch and husband Jeff, Jenna Caudill and husband Matthew, Roy Shortt and wife Katie, and Candy Craft; 15 great-grandchildren, Ariel Price, Mya and Carter Pike, Ty and Easton Rethwisch, Aiden, Charlie and Amelia Caudill, Jayden, Aubrey, Harper, Isaac and Ellie Mae Shortt, and Destiny and Logan Slone.
