Scholarship Golf Classic set

The 19th annual Southeast Education Foundation Scholarship Golf Classic will be held Saturday, May 16, at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course at Cumberland. The format is a four-man, select-shot scramble 18-hole competition.

The 2009 classic honors former SKCTC faculty member and golf enthusiast Lillian Faye Simpson who founded the tournament in 1989.

All proceeds from the event go to the education foundation which provides scholarships for students who attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. Southeast has an enrollment of 4,800 students at five sites located in Harlan, Letcher and Bell counties with the majority of students receiving some form of financial aid.

The price to participate is $60 per person or $240 for a team and includes the use of a golf cart and a lunch. The fee is tax deductible, and, as in years past, golfers will once more have the opportunity to win various “special feat” prizes, according to Rhonda Creech, tournament director.

She noted the tourney will commence at 8:30 a.m. with a putting contest sponsored by Black Mountain Resources. A consecutive putting contest, sponsored by Powell Construction Co., will also be held with a top prize of $5,000 awarded to the golfer who can sink a series of putts in succession from various distances on the green.

The grand prize will be a 2009 Pontiac G8 automobile, sponsored by Creech Chevrolet-Buick-Pontiac of Harlan. The first golfer who hits a hole in one from the white tee on hole No. 8 will win the car. Creech Motors has also sponsored a fourday vacation to the Trump Taj Mahal for the golfer who hits an ace on the eighth hole on the second time around the course. The local business will also sponsor prizes associated with holes 3 and 6.

Other sponsors of the event include VIP Sporting Goods, the Ready to Work Program of SKCTC, Creech Motors, S&S Service, Inc., Tobacco Pouch, Black Mountain Resources, BB&T, Powell Construction, Co., Barnes & Noble, Coca-Cola, SKCTC Adult Education Program and Cash Express.

New for 2009 will be a silent auction sponsored by Advance Auto, Kentucky Mine Supply and the Benham School House Inn.

Participants may register to play on the day of the event. For further details, contact Rhonda Creech, 589-3084, or Chuck Sturgill, 589-3228.
