Volunteer firefighters gathered outside Cowan Elementary School to pickup meals for delivery to students’ homes while classrooms are closed. The school is partnering with Gordon, Kingscreek and Sandlick volunteer fire departments to deliver food after the school district stopped using buses to deliver the meals. The schools have continued to provide lunches for students after the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close and switch to Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) Days, but delivering the meals by bus was canceled because of concern for the drivers’ health. Volunteer fire departments stepped up at Cowan to take over the deliveries. The school year is scheduled to end May 12 without students returning to the classrooms.
