Jennifer S. Meier, of Canton, Ohio, presented Marietta Collins, secretary of the Mountain Montessori Preschool Board, with a check for $50,000 on June 22 from the William C. Meier Foundation. The unrestricted grant is a wish of Mrs. Meier’s late husband, William C. Meier, who died last August.
“We want to use this money to start a capital campaign to help this school pay off its debts and repairs to the building,” said Mrs. Meier.
The school was started by a group of parents and the school’s director, Anne Leslie Hissom about 24 years ago. The first class was held at the Cowan Community Center with a class of five students.
“A whole lot of love, a whole lot of heart, a whole lot of people have been involved in making this happen,” said Hissom, who will be running the school fulltime beginning in August.
The parent-run, non-profit has two certified teachers and can take up to 28 students. The school awards one student a scholarship each year.
“Education is important and especially in this area and this is why I am happy to be involved in this school,” said Mrs. Meier, who has been sending financial donations to the school for nine years.
