Seniors enjoy meeting at center

Go to our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each event: www.facebook.com/ pages/Hemphill-Community Center, www.facebook.com/Hemphillblacksheep.

Check out our two new websites: www.hemphillcenter.org and www.blacksheepbrickoven.org.

We hosted a group from the Virginia Mennonite University last week. The university is in Blacksburg. William and Boyd picked and sang while the group had a meal from the Black Sheep Menu. They came to hear about us after seeing the PBS special from last spring. We are doing this Black Sheep thing and people are interested and coming from all over to hear more. Among these folks were a woman from Albania and a man from Mongolia. We are so happy they came.

Happy birthday, Roger B. So glad you and your family celebrated at our place.

The Senior Fellowship is still meeting at our facility and thriving. The seniors do their own food and sit down to a meal on Tuesday mornings at Hemphill Center. If you are 60 or older, bring a covered dish and join the fun. These guys “don’t need no rocking chair.” There is never a dull minute with them. Young attitudes and deep wisdom.

We made our rolls with fresh peaches last week and boy-howdy were they a hit. One guy said if his family had not been here to help eat them he would have eaten the whole pan himself. That’s what we are trying for. It’s a rewarding thing for all the Black Sheep to hear.

We have been having young musicians who are showing up to do open mic when the featured musicians at Friday Nite Supper Club take a break. There is a 30-minute break in between usually from 7:45 – 8:15. The featured musicians play two 45-minute sets starting at 7 and ending at 9 p.m., and play a variety of genres. Aspiring musicians and veteran musicians are always welcome to show up and perform. It’s always fun to play or listen. There is no cover charge so it’s always a laid back easy crowd to play for. Come join us in supporting local live music by local singer/picker/songwriters while dining on good Black Sheep Brick Oven Bakery foods.

We decided to place our unsold bread outside in coolers on Saturday mornings for folks to take. It will be left on the outside stage until a more suitable arrangement can be made to dispense it. This preservative free bread will not last long in this heat. We hope folks come and take it on Saturdays before it sits too long in the heat. It will keep almost a week at room temperature. It will feed the belly and feed the soul. If you are hungry show up early so you can get a loaf. We want you to have first pick.

Very Important Note: John Ng’s Four Seasons Martial Arts will be meeting henceforth till further notice on Sunday evenings 5 p.m. Master Frank Sexton, instructor.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are being held at Hemphill Community Center. We are proud to host these meeting for those on the recovery road. Meetings will be held Wednesdays and Sundays at 6 p.m., weekly. All are welcome.

The Digging Up Roots Ancestry Forum is meeting on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants are really enjoying themselves. Participants are invited to bring a laptop or tablet, and paper and pen. This is a free, bimonthly workshop offered courtesy of Jo Ann Hall Osborne. For more information, call (606) 855-4463.

You have an open invitation to come and hang out with us at the center when you can. We have Wi-Fi now so kids and adults are better satisfied not being cut off from their electronic devices. We also have a playground and a walking track so bring the whole family for a visit. Regardless of differences in education, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or perceived differences, all are welcome and will be treated with justice and friendship. It’s a hate free zone and you are invited! Come and linger among friends!
