Memorial services were held earlier this week for Walter Cline Greer, 89, of Burdine, who died June 6 at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Cline was born September 27, 1922, at Myra in Pike County and lived most of his life in Burdine. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of the American Legion.
Cline was known for his love of the outdoors. He was a fisherman who also enjoyed searching for dry land fish (morel mushrooms). He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan.
Greer was a son of the late Noah and Belva Johnson Greer. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty Sue Hall Greer, who died on May 5. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Bessie Cable and Irene Hounsell, and a brother, Gene Greer.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Krzak of Dunham; two sons, Jimmy Greer of Richmond, Va., and Johnny Greer of Burdine. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Joe Richard Krzak, Michael Krzak, Jennifer Williams, and Jason Greer; and three great-grandchildren, Skylar Krzak, Carter Williams, and Henry Williams.
Services were held Monday in the Polly & Craft Funeral Home in Jenkins. Military rites were performed by members of VFW Post 9600 in Pound, Va.
