Services are held for Juanita Curtis




Juanita P. Vass Curtis, 82, died November 23 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born in Sweet Chalybeate, Va., to the late Charles E. and Pauline Brown Vass, she was the widow of Mark H. Curtis Jr. She was a sister of the late Charles E. Vass and Charles O. Vass.

Mrs. Curtis was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church and attended Deer Stable Baptist Church in Sand Gap, where she had been living. She was a former Berea College employee and also worked for Papaleno’s restaurant for many years and the Old Kentucky Camp Ground. She and her husband were foster parents to 54 children through the years.

Surviving are nine children, Mark H Curtis III, Amma, W.Va.; Juanita P. Hersom and Meredith Curtis, both of Sand Gap; Robert A. Curtis, Joseph S. Curtis, Roy Curtis, and Candy Adkins, all of Berea; and Alice C. Adams and Gwendolyn Back, both of Letcher; a sister, Violet Marie Vance, Barboursville, W.Va.; 22 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held November 28 in Berea. Burial was in Madison County Memorial Gardens.
