Ernest Martin McCarter, 87, of Jenkins, died November 10 at Pikeville Medical Center.
Born in South Carolina to the late John Arthur and Lillian Groves McCarter, he was the widower of Thelma Rife McCarter and the father of the late Doug McCarter.
He was retired from the coal mining industry where he was an equipment operator, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Operating Engineers Local 139 in Wisconsin.
Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Mullins and husband Stoney of Dandridge, Tenn., and Debbie Thomas and husband Ralph of Jenkins; grandchildren, Eric and Tawnya Mullins, Shawn Hunsucker, Misty Clooney, Megan McCarter and Chris McCarter; and seven great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jarrod Mullins, Grace Mullins, Jacob Mullins, and Morgan and Landon Looney.
Funeral services were held November 12 at Carty Funeral Home in Jenkins. Burial was in Jenkins Payne Gap Cemetery.
