Services held for George Phillips

George Evans Phillips, 77, of Mesa, Ariz., died March 10.

Born at Cromona, he was a son of the late Leonard “Derby” and Ora Phillips. He was a brother of the late Leonard “Junior” Phillips, Glen Phillips, Opal Phillips and Lois Steinbacher.

Phillips retired from St. Regis Paper Co. in Middletown, Ohio, after 30 years as a pressman and department supervisor. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War where he was a master sergeant and received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal with three bronze campaign stars, National Defense Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He was a Mason; a member of Jefferson Lodge 90, Middletown, Ohio; American Legion Post 218 Middletown, Ohio, and Apache Junction, Ariz., Post 27; and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3809, Franklin, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Sanders Phillips; three children, George “Doug” Phillips of Auckland, New Zealand; Jon “Kevin” Phillips and wife Doreen of Orinda, Calif.; and Suzanne of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Emma Hall-Phillips, Lucas Gabriel Phillips and Nathan Alexander Smith; three sisters, Linda Obrien, Clara Washnock, and Vera Miller; and two brothers, Jim Phillips and Allen Phillips.
