Services held for James Bates, 81




Funeral services for James Donald Bates, 81, were held February 10 at Letcher Funeral Home in Whitesburg. Burial was in Bates Cemetery at Blackey.

He died February 8 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.

A son of the late W.R. and Annie Dixon Bates, he was the widower of Maxie Perkins Bates, and later married Lottie Bates, who survives him.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, James E. Bates of Somerset, Alan Bates of Blackey, and Chris Bates of Jeremiah; two brothers, Ed Bates of Lexington and Tom Bates of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Draxie Banks of Michigan and Helen Bentley of Whitesburg; four grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren.
