Joan Brown Sparks, 71, of Nancy, died December 24 of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in Hardburly, she was the daughter of Mildred Brown of Nancy and the late Lawson Brown, and the widow of Ronnie Sparks. She was also preceded in death by a son, Randy Sparks.
Mrs. Sparks was a 1963 graduate of Whitesburg High School and completed cosmetology training in Lexington. For more than 20 years, she operated Jett’s Grocery in Jabez with her husband and parents.
She and her husband were founding members of the Faubush Tri-Co Volunteer Fire Department, and she was a member of the all-female team which competed in the Firefighter Olympics.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Sparks completed her associate’s degree in physical therapy assistant.
She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church and Fidelis #545 Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving in addition to her mother are a daughter, Cynthia; a sister, Janet Madden and husband Henry of Isom; two nieces, Wendy Rutherford and husband Gary of Pound, Va., and Amanda Madden-Dyal and husband Jason of Lexington; and a friend, Mike Farmer of Ohio.
Funeral services were held December 28 in Nancy. Burial was in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
