Owen Bates, 75, of Winchester, Ind., died July 6 at Pine Knoll Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
Born at Thornton, he was a son of the late Andrew and Zettie “ Tudy” Bates, and a brother of the late Carnealous “Cack” Bates, Grady Bates, Edna Bates, and Herman Bates. He was a brother-in-law of the late Louise Bates, Verna Bates and Joe Pena, and a son-inlaw of the late Manus and Irene Ison.
He was a member of the Winchester ( Ind.) Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Janice Sue Ison Bates; four children, Norman Bates, Rick Bates and wife Joni, Lisa Morford and husband Rob, and Steven Bates and wife Carolyn; grandchildren, Melinda Peed and husband Nathan, Christina Casperson, Zachary Bates, Tori Morford and Justin Rice, Erika Morford, and Cody Ray, Allison Morford, Kelbee Bates, and Kylie Bates; great-grandchildren, Melissa Rice, James Rice, and Gabriel Rice; two brothers, Greeley Bates and Kermit Bates and wife Oma; three sisters, Norma Jean Pena, Molene Halcomb and husband Allen, and Margarine Gibson and husband Gibson; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Bates.
Funeral services were held July 10 in Winchester, Ind. Burial was in Fountain Park Cemetery.
