Shape note singers rattled the roof

Greetings all! The shape note singing was particularly awesome on Sunday with dinner on the ground.

We hosted day two of the Double All Day Singing that took place in Letcher County on Aug. 11 and 12. The Saturday singing was at Calvary College in Blackey, and the Sunday singing was at our place.

Some of the meal was cooked over the fires on the grounds of Hemphill Community Center. Thanks to Stephanie Devine and Brandon Fleming for helping to cook the dinner.

We gathered at 6 a.m., and the resulting meal showed the dedication to hospitality among shape note enthusiasts. It was yummy if we do say so.

Our singing guests from all over the nation lifted their voices in song and rattled the rafters of our old building with the old hymns familiar to us all. The house was full and the fellowship was warm and sweet. We are thinking Heaven must surely sound a lot like that!

We need to announce that we will not be shutting down during the month of September as has been our custom in recent years. We will be having business as usual in that month as we are having to work hard to keep the bills paid and the lights on at Hemphill Community Center.

We have been having a great time and working very hard too. We have a delightful group of volunteers and patrons who hang out with us. We are so grateful to each and every one for their loving kindness and community spirit.
