Sheriff’s department now dispatching 24/7

Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb said his department has resumed 24-hour dispatching services.

“We’re back to 24-hour dispatch thanks to the Letcher County Fiscal Court,” said Webb.

Citing a lack of money, the sheriff’s department suspended around-the-clock service in February and asked the Kentucky State Police post in Hazard to take calls from midnight until 8 a.m.

When people called the sheriff ‘s department after midnight the call went directly to a state police dispatcher who then dispatched a Letcher County Sheriff ‘s deputy to the scene.

Webb said he had to make the decision not to have a dispatcher during the late night hours because his office has not collected all of the tax money and had to borrow $40,000 from the fiscal court last fall.

Webb said not having a dispatcher in the sheriff’s office all the time did not affect any of the police services.

“I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused,” said Webb.
