County residents 60 and older can get free shingle and pneumonia vaccines at the Letcher County Health Department when they pay for a seasonal flu vaccine.

Children in kindergarten through 12th grade can get a free tetanus vaccine when they are administered a flu shot at the health department. The free vaccines are available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), commonly known as the stimulus act.

Sheila Hogan, lead nurse at the Letcher County Health Department, said a shipment of seasonal flu vaccines should arrive at the health department today (Wednesday).

Cost of the flu shot is $20. The vaccine for H1N1, or swine flu, won’t be available until later this fall.
