Single-car wreck kills woman, 78




Letcher County Deputy Coroner Wallace Bolling Jr. ruled blunt force trauma to the chest as the cause of death of a 78-yearold Whitesburg woman who died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle wreck at Van.

Maxie Mae Thomas Hampton was traveling southbound on KY 15 around 6:20 p.m. on November 15 when she apparently lost control of the 1995 Crown Victoria she was operating and left the roadway striking a guardrail, according to the Kentucky State Police.

Bolling pronounced Hampton dead at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. Police say Hampton was not wearing a seat belt.

KSP Trooper Ben McCray is investigating the accident.

Funeral services for Maxie Mae Hampton were held November 18 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery at Letcher.

She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Ina Caudill Thomas, and the widow of Clifton Hampton.

Surviving are a daughter, Shelia Hollifield of Whitesburg; three sons, Randal Hampton of West Chester, Ohio; Robert Hampton of Oxnard Calif.; and Timothy Hampton of Bethel, Ohio; a brother, Eulis Hampton of Florida; 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
