The Whitesburg campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, in an inter-campus competition, was the winner in the recent Recycling Challenge.
Competing against SKCTC sites at Harlan, Middlesboro, Pineville and Cumberland, participants from the Whitesburg site collected 401 pounds of paper, 11 pounds of aluminum and five pounds of plastic bottles, or 1.14 pounds per student. All materials have been delivered to the recycling center in Letcher County.
The contest, according to the event organizer and college faculty member Lisa A. Ahlstedt, helped divert over 600 pounds of materials from area landfills, not including cardboard, which added over 300 additional pounds to the total.
Deborah Young, Whitesburg Campus director, said, “Our students, faculty and staff worked as a team in winning the contest. We are so very happy that hundreds of pounds of materials have been recycled as we work to safeguard the environment.”
