A Knott County school official has been recognized by Forward in the Fifth for her efforts to advance education in eastern Kentucky.

Debbie Joseph Smith, coordinator of the Family Resource Youth Services Center at Carr Creek Elementary School, was presented the Appalachian Leaders in Education (AppLE) Award. She was given the award in the K-12 support staff category at Forward in the Fifth’s Education Leadership Day last month at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.

Smith, who has been a family and youth services coordinator for 20 years, brings in work groups from churches around the country each summer to assist families with home repairs. She also does a summer program, called Extreme Room Makeovers, where children who are living with grandparents or other relatives choose a theme for their bedroom.
