Solar panels are paying for themselves at Hemphill Ctr.

Go to our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each event, www.facebook.com/pages/Hemphill Community-Center or www.facebook.com/ Hemphillblacksheep.

Check out our two new websites: www.hemphillcenter.org and www.blacksheepbrickoven.org.

We have always been waiting for the electric bill with a full month of solar power at the Center. So we now know what it means for us. Our electric bill is $113.25. The lowest in our history. The solar panels are paying for themselves. We are so thankful.

The third annual All Day Shape Note Singing with dinner on the ground will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this coming Sunday, Aug. 11. If you are attending church that day just show up after church. We would love to have you with us.

We have been having young musicians who are showing up to do open mic when the featured musicians at Friday Nite Supper Club take a break. There is a 30-minute break in between, usually from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m. The featured musicians play two 45-minute sets starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. and play a variety of genres. Aspiring musicians and veteran musicians are always welcome to show up and perform. It’s always fun to play or listen. There is no cover charge so it’s always a laidback, easy crowd to play for. Come join us in supporting local live music by local singers/pickers/ songwriters while dining on good Black Sheep Brick Oven Bakery foods.

We decided to place our unsold bread outside in coolers on Saturday mornings for folks to take. It will be left on the outside stage until a more suitable arrangement can be made to dispense it. This preservative free bread will not last long in this heat. We hope folks come and take it on Saturdays before it sits too long in the heat. It will keep almost a week at room temperature. It will feed the belly and feed the soul. If you are hungry, show up early so you can get a loaf. We want you to have first pick.

Very important note: John Ng’s Four Seasons Martial Arts will be meeting henceforth till further notice to Sunday evenings 5 p.m. Master Frank Sexton, instructor.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are being held at Hemphill Community Center. We are proud to host these meeting for those on the recovery road. Meetings will be held Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. weekly. All are welcome.

The Digging Up Roots Ancestry Forum is meeting on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants are really enjoying themselves. Participants are invited to bring a laptop or tablet, and paper and pen. This is a free bimonthly workshop offered courtesy of Jo Ann Hall Osborne. For more information, call (606) 855- 4463.

You have an open invitation to come and hang out with us at the Center when you can. We have Wi-Fi now so kids and adults are better satisfied not being cut off from their electronic devices. We also have a playground and a walking track so bring the whole family for a visit. Regardless of differences in education, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or perceived differences, all are welcome and will be treated with justice and friendship. It’s a hate free zone and you are invited!! Come and linger among friends!!!

Weekly Quote: Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning, they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one or it may be a physical one, or it may be both but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Fredrick Douglass
