Solar panels coming to Hemphill Comm. Center

Go to our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each www.facebook.com/ pages/Hemphill-Community Center, www.facebook.com/Hemphillblacksheep.

Check out our two brand new websites: www.hemphillcenter.org & www.blacksheepbrickoven.org.

Last year about this time I wrote the following:

It is an ancient healing process. From the cutting and gathering of the wood, to the laying of the fire, to the mixing and shaping of the bread this is a time-honored tradition. For thousands of years our ancestors have cooked this way.

Sometime in the next few weeks you will have a chance to come and bake bread in the brick oven. Start thinking of the bread you want to make and as soon as we work on the oven a little more we will invite you to come bake your bread in the community oven. Get ready!!!

Now…

We have been up and running for almost a year. We have learned so much and we keep critiquing our work and our wares. We have gone through a metamorphosis at Hemphill Community Center. We are a progressive free space now where the closed minded are having their minds stretched to embrace a place where all are welcome. Thankfully, once the human mind is stretched to expand it can never go back to its original confines.

Black Sheep Bakery is our sole funding stream. We are no longer a just a senior center. All ages are encouraged to hang out at our place.

Regardless of differences in education, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or perceived differences, all are welcome and will be treated with justice and friendship.

The music is still happening each and every Friday night. No longer is it just bluegrass. We hire awesome local musicians/songwriters/ singers to come and play for those who come to support our efforts to produce great foods, create jobs, and build community. Americana, folk, ole time, honky-tonk, Southern rock and bluegrass are the genres. There is no longer a cover charge. The new supper club environment, where folks can come and enjoy music while eating their evening meal from the fabulous Black Sheep Menu, is welcoming and warm. Music on Fridays from 7-9 p.m. Support your local musicians!

Solar panels will soon be atop our building and we are excited for that to happen as we are always shackled to electrical costs for the building. We will have payments on the panels but we are promised relief from the huge $1,200 to $1,400 bills we pay in winter. We are presently raising the down payment required for our loan. If you can help, please contact us. All donations are tax deductible. We need to get this done so we can put our money into the community instead of the power company.

The Digging Up Roots Ancestry Forum is meeting on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The next one will be held May 2. The final one in May will May 30 Participants are invited to bring a laptop or tablet, and paper and pen. The folks gathering for this are having lively conversations and doing research of great interest to them. This will a free bimonthly workshop offered courtesy of Jo Ann Hall Osborne. For more information, call (606)855-4463.

We have converted Friday Nite Pickin’ to a supper club environment where folks can come and enjoy music while eating their evening meal from the fabulous Black Sheep Menu. We will have a featured local singer/songwriter every Friday. Come support local live music and community building efforts. Music on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.

You have an open invitation to come and hang out with us at the Center when you can. We have Wi-Fi now so kids and adults are better satisfied not being cut off from their electronic devices. We also have a playground and a walking track so bring the whole family for a visit.

It’s a hate free zone and you are invited!! Come and linger among friends!!!

Weekly Quote: There is no situation that is not transformable. There is no person who is hopeless. There is no set of circumstances that cannot be turned about by ordinary human beings and their natural capacity for love of the deepest sort. -Desmond Tutu
