Some prosecutors fear early release of inmates will bring ‘mass exodus’

Some Kentucky prosecutors are concerned about a possible “mass exodus” of felons from jails because of a provision in the budget allowing early release of non violent inmates.

The proposal to allow some inmates to serve the last six months or more of their sentences on home incarceration is part of the state’s effort to save money and reduce jail crowding.

Wayne Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron, president elect of the Kentucky Commonwealth’s Attorney Association, said the proposal is shortsighted, lacking in specifics and dangerous.

State corrections officials said they did not yet know how many inmates would be released.

Rep. Kathy Stein, D-Lexington, House Judiciary chairwoman and a member of the state Criminal Justice Council, said the eligible prisoners would be “vetted completely and thoroughly” before their release.
