Something new planned for Blackey Day

The Blackey Improvement Committee is working and planning for the best ever Blackey Day on Oct. 12 and 13.

We had such a response to our musical lineup on Saturday last year we could not fit everyone in, so we agreed to extend our Blackey Day celebration to Friday afternoon, Oct. 12, starting at 5 p.m., when the Revelation Ranch drama team will be performing.

Then we are trying something new. The Blackey Area’s Got Talent entry fee will be $5. First place will get $100, second place $50 and third place $25. It should be a lot of fun and the winner will sing Saturday. We really have got plenty of talent in Letcher County.

The Blackey Day celebration will be starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13. We will have back-toback music from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Violet Watts does such a good job with the entertainment. She has got Dean Osborn, HCTC School of Bluegrass Ensemble,

Mountain Melody, Will Caudill, Bak to Bak and those are just a few of the entertainers she has scheduled. I will have a complete lineup of all the entertainment printed later.

We will be having the cakewalk, which everybody enjoys. The silent auction is always fun and sometimes you can get a bargain.

We will also have a big tent this year so if it rains, the wind blows or the sun’s too hot, we’ve got you covered.

We have our Blackey Day t-shirts, long-sleeved t-shirts, sweats and hats on order. We will have them for sale very soon. If you live away and want a shirt or cap, we would be glad to mail it to you. Our logo this year is Take Me Home Country Roads.

And of course we hope all roads lead to Letcher County, Blackey, for our festival celebration Oct. 12 and 13. We try to have something for all ages with the inflatables and other entertainment for the children. Music all day, food and craft booths.

Letcher County is a beautiful place all year, but in the fall the mountains look like a painting they are so beautiful and the weather most times is perfect.

All the festivals in Letcher County are like homecomings or family reunions. People who live away come home for the festivals and we want to encourage this. So plan on visiting the mountains of eastern Kentucky in the fall and take in the many festivals.

We had a wonderful crowd last year with many people from different states that came home to Letcher County for Blackey Day.

We still have a few craft booths left and food booths. If you want to reserve your booth, call (606) 632-3777 or 634-2530. For information, call (606) 633-4029.

We will be working until October to make this the best Blackey Day ever.
