Sparks rites held




Jeffrey Wayne “Detroit” Sparks died August 20 at his home in Neon. He was 45 years old and had been diagnosed recently with an inoperable brain tumor.

A son of the late Paul and Mary Frances Bradshaw Sparks, he was born at Fleming and was reared in Taylor, Mich. He returned to Letcher County in 1996.

Sparks attended the Department of Criminal Justice Police Academy in Frankfort, and worked as a police officer in Neon. He brought the first drug dogs into eastern Kentucky, which were used in his work with the DARE program.

He served as a officer for nine years with the Neon, Jenkins, and Whitesburg Police Departments, and the Knott and Letcher County Sheriff’s Departments. The last 11 months he drove cross-country for U.S. Express Trucking.

Funeral services were held August 23 at Carty Funeral Home. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Crystal Johnson Sparks; a son, Levin Jeffrey Sparks; three daughters, Jaime Lynn Sparks, Blackey; Jessica Ann and Juliann Megan, Michigan; a grandson, Logan Jay Howard, Blackey; three sisters, Mary Paula Savelli, Neisha Morris, and Lisa Davis, all of Michigan; a brother, Todd Sparks, Michigan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Pam Johnson, McRoberts; a friend, Bremen Slone; and a cousin, Tim Seals.

Sparks was a grandson of the late Orville and Goldie Sparks, and C.B. and Alma Bradshaw.
