I heard on the news that a coal truck driver wrecked on the ice and killed himself. He was a contract hauler, so this doesn’t affect the safety record of the coal company. What’s wrong with this picture?

I think it’s insane how some parents won’t allow their kids to watch Harry Potter, yet these same parents tell their kids to believe in a Jewish zombie (who is his own father) and you have to eat his flesh and blood to enter some magical kingdom, postmortem, where everything is okay. That’s just silly y’all.

The water situation in Letcher County is much worse than just contaminated water. The whole situation has a foul smell of political mismanagement and corruption. The entire county is without water except for the Jenkins system. The county is trying to get connected to the Knott County water system and is refusing to operate the water plants in order to pressure Kentucky officials into declaring a state of emergency to get that done. There is a functional water plant at Blackey that the county refuses to operate. Meanwhile, we have not had water for two days. The county secretly shut down the Blackey water plant and has been buying water from the Whitesburg plant at a cost much higher than what it would cost to produce the treated water at Blackey. As I understand it, contractors that were supposed to complete the water line to connect Letcher County to the Knott County system have neither been timely nor efficient in getting their contract completed. In addition, there were problems bringing the water line under the CSX Railroad. County officials are partially creating a crisis by refusing to operate the Blackey plant. They also knew when they shut down the Blackey plant that the Whitesburg plant could not keep up with the demand in the county. They are using some relatively minor problems to create a crisis and pressure the state into assisting in this Knott County Interconnect Project to cover their incompetence. The Mountain Eagle
needs to look into this issue.

A lot of people say children should be 12 years old before they are baptized. People say they have baptized little children at three years old. Read your Bible where Jesus got baptized by John the Baptist. He was somewhere around 30 years old. I’m not saying you have to be 30. I’m saying that it is an adult decision and not one made by little children. Think about it.

I think someone should do something about the girl in the Whitesburg area selling her pills. She has a little girl and I think she should straighten up. I think it is pretty bad that she is selling bad stuff when there is a cop living near her.

If loving you is wrong I don’t want to be right.

To the pretty woman who works at the feed store: Y’all got any reindeer chow?

I’m calling Speak Your Piece to warn everybody about Social Services in Whitesburg. If you try to get help from them and then get your babies taken by them for no apparent reason then you might as well give up on getting them back. No matter how hard you try or no matter how many drug tests you take, you won’t get your babies back. You go to court and the judge just sees it one way. People they do give the kids to can go do drugs and drink and none of the social workers want to do anything about it. I don’t think it is right and you know who you are. If you’ve got your children in Whitesburg you better take them and run, because there is nothing you are going to be able to do. Even if you please the courts, something always comes up for them to keep your kids away from you, even on Christmas and on their birthdays.

We often wonder where our kids learn so many negative things in life. The shirt the scorekeeper had on at the Cowan and the Whitesburg ballgame was a disgrace around children. I was embarrassed for his children. If my children went to that school I’d ask the parents to pitch in and buy him some clothes that would not be vulgar. Principal Robinson read a speech before the game about the requirements of proper behavior and no vulgar language, and one of his own school parents had on a perverted shirt. It must have been an embarrassment to him. Next time have some respect for Mr. Robinson and the children.

Where is Waldo? Where is Waldo? I’ve looked all over Jenkins and I can’t find Waldo.

To all people in Whitesburg: You need to be warned that if Social Services takes your children you need to be careful where they put them. They could be put in a home where a person drinks and does drugs and just got out of jail. That’s who is going to be taking care of your children. The people at Social Services haven’t been doing their jobs to make sure your kids are safe. Even the judge goes with the people who are on drugs and drink. Be warned. If you are a drunk and drug addict, you get to keep yours.

When I was young and they first started strip mining, the coal trucks stayed off of slick roads. Now I sit snow bound and there’s no work today, but I hear the coal trucks go by. Where is the safety factor?

To all the people in the Linefork area: You better watch it. A certain man robbed his own house and blamed other people for doing so. Now he is dealing drugs right off the side of the road. I have called the police repeatedly, but they won’t do anything about it. I guess he has them in his pocket, too. Congratulations. You have gotten away with everything. Now maybe one day it will come back on you.

The leadership of Letcher County says that broadband is the wave of the future and they’re working hard on getting it to the citizens of Letcher County. A shortage of water is predicted in the future and the leadership of Letcher County has brought that to us already. There are more water shortages in Letcher County. Does this have to do with leadership and management or does it have to do with the climate of Letcher County?

I was walking in the parking lot of a local grocery store and happened to glance inside of a vehicle and saw a big purse in the seat with what looked to be three or four of those $12 T-bone steaks in it. I suggest if you all want to stay in business and keep meat prices down, you need to package your T-bone steaks two or three in a big long pack or you need to make it a family pack and give people a better value since people are ripping you off for $30 to $40 a trip. There’s no telling how many people are doing this. Happy holidays. Protect your T-bones.

No wonder people in Jenkins cannot fix up their own homes or winterize. My monthly water bill cost $150. Taxes on Jenkins High School were paid years and years ago. The streets are still bad. The old Jenkins High School should be condemned, but it still stands. Ditches are overfilled with water and junk. They will not clean that up. That expensive clock they put in town doesn’t even tell the correct time. No wonder Jenkins won’t prosper. People are going to have to start standing up to City Hall. I don’t know why people have to pay property taxes if they don’t keep up things in the city. How can they charge you taxes twice in one year? Jenkins is outrageous, people. Quit letting them take over your lives. Go to these meetings.

I am replying to the person calling in about older people who dye their hair. Why color your hair? It looks so fake and cheap. Why don’t you just leave yourself alone and let nature take its course? Be old and have gray hair like the rest of us.

When I worked for a coal operator he told me he didn’t pay any income tax — that’s what he hired his CPA for. Many times a poor working man pays more taxes than the millionaire who owns the company the poor man works for. It’s against the religion of some politicians for rich people to pay taxes. Otherwise, the rich people wouldn’t be giving the politicians money to keep from paying taxes.

If I were you I wouldn’t condemn the preacher you are talking about who has been preaching about people coloring their hair. Lay off of him. He knows what he is doing. He has a habit of smoking he can’t quit, so please leave him alone.

To a certain person: My husband and I can’t continue to argue about what you have done to us. I am tired of you stealing from us. You better leave us alone. I have taken seven and a half years of this and I am not going to take it anymore. The next time I come home and find anything missing I will call the police. You are going to get the cops called on you.

I never could stand Jesse Ventura, but he does have a lot of good information. The government keeps a lot from us. He is on TruTV at Friday night at 10 p.m. Right now he has 4 million viewers.

If a certain church could get a lawyer, lay their hands on him and pray for him to be the judge, is that really the House of the Lord?

When you shop, add up your things before you pay. I have been overcharged twice at the vendors’ mall.

Someone was complaining about no one answering the phone at Walmart. I don’t know about that, but I am getting tired of Walmart not having the right kind of milk or eggs. I am in there a lot in the morning or midday and they never have what I want in the food section. I am going to take my business to Food World if they don’t find someone who knows what they are doing in the food section.

This is an addition to the person complaining in Speak Your Piece about Walmart not putting calls through to the proper departments. Not only do you not get through, when they answer and say ‘Walmart’ it is so fast that I’m not sure I have dialed the right number. I’ll ask the person who answers the phone to explain it to me slower.

I have heard about all I can stand to hear about Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan. They are nothing but white trash drunks.

In the 1950’s the water in the Tug River was coal black. In the 1960’s the river in Cleveland, Ohio caught on fire. In the 1970’s the government decided to do something about these things. In the 1980’s the professors of Oklahoma University said the local water caused cancer. In the 1980’s conservatives said it didn’t matter, because the end of time was coming soon. In the next century, that is our present times, some claim that mine water causes type 2 diabetes. Others say it’s just what you want to believe that counts.

Incompetence, mismanagement, and negligence are the only words to describe this fiasco with the Letcher County Water District. For four days now the Blackey area has been without water. The rest of the county system was out from two to three days. None of this should have ever happened, and with proper management and planning it would not have happened. First, at some unknown time and without any public notice, the Blackey water plant was shut down and the county began buying water from Whitesburg. They knew, or should have known, that the Whitesburg system could not meet the needs of county, and they knew that any problems with the Whitesburg plant would result in most of the county being without water. Yet, they chose to close down a perfectly good water plant without any justification whatsoever. Second, in an attempt to cover up the incompetence and mismanagement, they refused to operate the Blackey plant during the crisis. When questioned about running the Blackey plant, the excuse was that it could not meet the demand. First, this is wrong; it could have met the need for emergency water on a limited basis and, second, when water was restored in Whitesburg and other areas of the county, the Blackey plant could have met the full need of everyone else and no one would have been without water longer than two days. The excuse that the county was planning to hook up with the Knott County Interconnect is no reason for this ill-advised decision to close the Blackey plant. Even with the Knott County supply, the Blackey plant should be kept available for just such emergencies as we experienced. Otherwise, the millions of dollars of taxpayer money invested in this plant is totally wasted. To have such a resource and to let it sit when desperately needed is an inexcusable breach of public trust. Finally, in trying to get information about the issue, people were provided imprecise information; or, misinformed and outright lied to about the situation. Public notices were not forthcoming and the media was not informed. In addition, Letcher County Water has no emergency numbers, no way to contact them on the weekends, no website, and little communications with the citizens of the county. With this level of incompetence and mismanagement, operating in secrecy and deceit, and considering previous failures to perform with any degree of accomplishment, it is past time to demand the resignation of the chairman of the Letcher County Water Board, Pee Wee Back, and any other personnel who may be at fault. We already pay more than average for water service, not to mention the taxes we pay in the county, and it is time to demand competence and performance from our county officials or we will continue to be faced with these unnecessary failures.

You put another woman through losing her husband and now the man won’t have you. What’s going to happen now?

I was just wondering how certain people are sleeping at night. Everybody tried to help that poor puppy at UZ. His legs are rotting off . His insides are all busted up and it was out here in this cold weather. The owners wouldn’t do anything for it. The ones that brought it down here abandoned it. The dog warden said three times he would come check on the puppy and he never did.

This is Water Warrior again. I am trying to encourage every Jenkins water customer to use your 1,000 gallons a month. Let it run out. Make a skating rink. Wash the hollow down. Please start using your 1,000 gallons a month. I was staying with someone else and used 1.07 gallons of water and paid $51 for it or whatever the minimum is. We cannot live like that. That is approximately five percent of the disability I get a month. I have worked most of my life and I don’t want to be disabled, so don’t call me a check drawer. I am an artist but I don’t sit on the porch and draw a check. I am a medical insurance specialist and a lab tech. I cannot work and I cannot afford $51 a month when I don’t even use 200 gallons. Please, the rest of you, if you are low income and having trouble buying food, use your 1,000 gallons a month. You pay for it. All you are doing is using what you pay for it. There is nothing illegal about this. I will do anything to get them to change this and let us pay only for what we use.

If you had an angel like I do, you would want the world to know it, too.

I’d just like to know what has happened to all of the county water. Did anybody ever think possibly that the gas company has shot and cracked a water table up here? Maybe they should ask the judge. He is in good contact with the gas company. Let him explain what has happened with the water. We didn’t have that bad of a drought. I’d just like for someone to tell me what has happened to the water situation all over the county.
