Speak Your Piece

Call 633-7508 from 9 am Tuesday to 9 am Friday. E-m@il address

In addition to the telephone and the U.S. Mail, The Mountain Eagle accepts comments to Speak Your Piece by electronic mail. Our address is: mtneagle@bellsouth.net

To Speak Your Piece: Complaining to the Kentucky Public Service Commission about the outrageous and maybe illegal rate increases is similar to sticking your finger in the ocean. Judge Ward, you do have options: Pressure Attorney General Jack Conway to investigate possible collusion and illegal contacts by the Kentucky Power lobbyists. They didn’t move their home office to Frankfort without benefits. Pressure the governor to intervene on behalf of your complaints. File suit in Franklin Circuit Court by benefit of a special counsel to investigate possible criminal activities in the form of gifts to PCS members. Convene a grand jury to investigate all doings and meetings between our elected officials and the lobbyists.

.

The garbage truck wreck just another excuse for Judge Jim Ward to cut services to the citizens of Letcher County. No one wants a driver to get hurt, so please continue to use the same policy you have used in the past. They have never picked up our garbage when the roads were slick, but would pick it up when the roads were not slick. What’s wrong with continuing this policy? Lots of folks do not have a suitable location to leave their garbage by a main road. We can’t put it on someone else’s property or in front of our neighbors’ homes. The uncontrolled cat and dog populations will make a mess of unguarded garbage. This change in policy will lead to more illegal dumping. The county requires us to pay for garbage pickup and that’s OK as long as they will pick it up. Come on, Judge Ward, work with us.

.

I want to be a millionaire. am asking one million people to donate $1 each or 100 million people to donate one penny each. This is the M.P. and I thank you in advance for your generosity.

.

I hear there was a police officer that followed a young lady up the hollow, pulled her over in a place where there were no houses, made her get out and go to the back of the car and then raped her. Young lady, if that is so you should have gone straight to Whitesburg hospital, been checked and called the police.

.

Today is Monday. I have thought about you all day because you are a special person. I miss you. If you ever need a shoulder, you know that I am here and I will always love you.

.

You can still buy Oxy 30s at a certain house in Jeremiah. It’s wide open.

.

The sanitation department picks up garbage on Tuesdays in Laurel Fork. Some people get their garbage picked up by trucks going to their homes and some have to carry their garbage down to the road. Why do some people have to take their garbage to the road even though they are disabled? Some are not disabled and the county will go all the way on the hill and pick theirs up. This makes me not want to pay my garbage bill.

.

Where’s that magistrate in District Two? You need to put a phone number out like everyone else so people can get in touch with you. We need to be able to reach you. If you don’t get on the ball and show some improvement around here, they might be hunting you a grass cutter to be pushing around.

.

To the person that asked they are hiding Jesus on the marquee signs: I do the marquee signs at my church. The reason we put the sayings on the back of the billboard is because we do not change the day of the services and what time and who our pastor is every time, because that is a lot of trouble. And Jesus knows what is on our hearts anyway.

.

Have you heard that anything is better than nothing? For the people who have no healthcare, Obamacare is better than nothing. The Republicans had eight years to provide us with healthcare and all we got was nothing. Anything is better than nothing.

.

I think our state representative should think twice about making people pass a drug test before they get food stamps, because there are some old people that couldn’t make it from day to day without their pain pills. If they pass that, they better be looking for another job the next time the election comes around.

.

If you are sick and tired of these high electric bills like me, call 1-888-432-9257. This is the number to Attorney General Jack Conway. Call and complain. Let’s pull together and see what we can do about this. My electric bill was more than $500. I am a single mother. I hardly make above that and it is a shame it takes me about three weeks of my pay to pay my electric bill. I am tired of it. Let’s take a stand and put the electric company in its place.

.

I just received my power bill and see that I have been billed for 38 days. Did this month have 38 days? It appears Kentucky Power Company has decided to collect seven days in February that should be paid in March. Could this explain some of the increase in this month’s charges? Why have they done this? I guess they’ll say it was due to weather conditions. My bill also states the next scheduled read date is February 11. Does this mean I will receive a bill for 25 days next month? I don’t remember ever getting a bill for 25 days, but then I don’t remember ever getting one for 38 days. My bill also states that if this bill is not paid by February 11, I will be charged $33.17 as a late fee. My question is: Why should I have to pay a late fee when a portion of my bill should not have been paid until March? So I am being charged higher rates and possibly late fees that I should not have to pay. The power company has also charged $60.83 in adjustments and school tax. Bottom line, the power company has figured out a way to get a lot of money ahead of time and the interest they will earn from it will give them even more, and they are being allowed to do it while putting this burden on the backs of us poor and elderly. They will justify it by saying the government will pay it through fuel assistance programs. Well, no one will pay mine but me, and there are many poor and elderly riding in my boat. The working poor and elderly live barely above the guidelines to receive this assistance and will suffer greatly by these actions. I have heard a lot about the power company’s budget. I think it’s about time someone cared about my budget. I am being told I have to budget my fixed income and make do the best I can. Why doesn’t the Kentucky Public Service Commission tell the power company to do the same?

(Thanks for your powerful comment. You ask many questions that deserve to be answered by both Kentucky Power Company and the Public Service Commission. We’ll forward it to them and ask for a reply.)

.

I would like to know when the school system is going to get back to thinking about the children’s education. All they think about is sports. People are having a hard time right now paying their bills. All you hear is playing ballgames.

.

Here I’ve been out of water for most of the winter, but the fiscal court is all hung up on the recreation center. How do you go about firing these people?

.

I saw a very critical remark saying some members start missing before they quit. That is very critical. Your electric bill is too expensive to lose any more members. I would make an apology and quit being so critical and pray.

.

The conservatives’ new idea is to put your Social Security retirement into private pension plans. I wonder if you surveyed those who invested their pension money in Enron stock how they’d feel about that?

. Our county judge/ executive told us to call the Kentucky Public Service Commission. When you call them all they do is take up for the power company. So evidentially they are in cahoots with each other. I think someone needs to check into this. They also need to check into a $500 deposit being placed on your bill by the power company if you are late making a payment.

.

I’m a person who works in nursing homes. If you have anybody in a nursing home, make sure you go in and see them as much as you can and ask questions. So many nursing homes are bad today and you don’t know which ones are good and which ones are bad. I’m telling you what I have seen and heard.

.

The ground and the people are cursed. Stay away.

.

To the gas companies up on the right-hand fork of Millstone: You have an old, white-headed man in one of your trucks that forced me in the ditch up there and was going to go off and leave me. I made him pull me out of that ditch. I saw the other day where that same man ran one of my neighbors in the ditch. You need to talk to that white-headed man. The next time I see him I am not going to be nice to him.

.

Just a note to the readers of Speak Your Piece. Some folks have used more electricity during these cold months than I can understand. Some of us have not. Yet we all pay and pay. Myself, I heat with propane. I work 80 hours a week and I am hardly ever home. I always eat out. My electric bill has more than doubled for the months of December and January. During the summer months I do use air conditioning, yet my electric bill is pretty fair. Why then does my electric bill double in December and January? This happens every year. Would the power company still cash our checks if we make them out to ‘damn thieves’ instead of Kentucky Power Company?

.

To whoever put in The Mountain Eagle that Bill Craft is the only pastor at the Millstone Missionary Baptist Church: That’s not true. They have had several pastors before him: Lorenzo Dale Baker, Chester Baker, Don Griner, Van Webb and a Greer.

.

I was just wondering how gas can be $3.12 in Whitesburg and $2.99 in Jenkins. What’s the difference? Could someone please tell me in next week’s Speak Your Piece?

.

I’d like to Speak My Piece about the Letcher County Fiscal Court. I’m an 80-yearold man and a taxpayer of this county for many years. I sat down and listened to what happened the other night. It wasn’t a fiscal court meeting. It was more like a Jenkins council meeting. Our magistrates act like a bunch of kids handling taxpayer money. They just give it away like it is nothing to them. We have other towns in this county. We also have Neon, Eolia, Blackey, Whitesburg and several rural areas that need help. Why should Jenkins be down there with their whole congregation and take over the whole fiscal court? We just got rid of one magistrate that ran the fiscal court and now another one is taking over. I do not agree with what they are doing with our taxpayer dollars.

.

I’m sure glad we are destroying our mountains and water so we can have such cheap electricity.

.

It’s January 20 in Letcher County. So what’s new? Well, everything as usual. Today no electricity. Tomorrow no water.

.

I went to the nursing home in Cumberland the other evening to visit a dear friend. I just don’t understand why the nurses will not come out from behind that desk station and help these nurse aides. It was around dinnertime when I was there and they were just so short on help. Some of the people that got their trays last, their food had to be cold. That place is really in bad shape. I heard someone ringing the call bell and I heard someone answer from up at the front desk where the nurses sit. They cut it off. Ten minutes passed and they rang their bell again. I timed this and after 48 minutes someone finally came. Come on, people. What is going on?

.

I want to let the people of Letcher County, especially the areas of Thornton, Mayking, Sergent, Millstone, that a certain boy is back in town. You better lock up everything you have, your batteries and welders. Every door that you have, you better lock cause if you don’t it won’t be long before things begin to go missing again. He has been gone for about three or four months but he is back in town. Be prepared.

.

Jim Ward is talking about putting those garbage cans right by the highway. That would be like jumping out of a frying pan into the fire. We’ve already had vandals beat up mailboxes all over, and now these drunks, dope heads and some of the young people will be going down the road knocking down garbage cans. You won’t be able to afford to have garbage picked up, because it is going to be all over the roads and our county is going to look horrible. It will be perfect for the vandals. You’ll have garbage all up and down the highways. It’s going to look terrible.

.

Many people in Letcher County just claim to be Christians. When is the last time these so-called Christians actually did something that Jesus said? I recommend reading the Sermon on the Mount in the book of Matthew.

.

This is to correct what was in Speak Your Piece last week: It is miniature instead of literature wonderland. I guess it is hard to understand me sometimes.

.

To woman: Why should she care what an ex-wife says or is doing? She’s got him now. You’ve had your chance with him and that is why you are called the ex. He wants nothing to do with a piece of trash who is a cheater and a skank. You have what you want and deserve now. So what gives you a reason to care about what is going on with your ex-husband now? You need to worry about your own low life and stop being obsessed with someone who isn’t a part of your life anymore. Move on, you skanky cheater. He did. That is why you are the ex-wife. Get it? You are completely X’d out of his life forever. You’ll always live with the pain of what you have done to him. He is so happy now that you are out of his life for good. He has moved on and you need to leave him alone. Some people should quit sticking their nose in other people’s business when they can’t even take care of their own life and family.

.

Why in the world would Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward tell anybody to call the Public Service Commission to complain when they are the ones that okayed the raise? They just talk to you like a dog. That is what he wanted them to do to us, and I am sick of it. They’re all in it together and nobody has enough sense to see it.

.

I think someone needs to investigate where city equipment is being for personal use at taxpayer expense. That’s not right, especially when they are always hollering ‘the city is broke, the city is broke.’ Why is the city allowing equipment to be used for personal use if the city is broke? How is the city paying for that?

.

To whoever is in charge of the Letcher County Jail: I think it is a disgrace that some of the guards there do not know what they are doing. I think that when you hire a new guard you need to take a closer look before hiring them. For instance, there is a new guard at jail who should leave workrelated issues at work. Sure these people are inmates, but they are human beings. She shouldn’t get out and talk about them and put them down like they are nothing but pieces of trash when she does not know them or anything about them. Please have respect for these inmates. Treat them as you would want to be treated. Do something about this, lady. Not only does this look bad on the inmates, this looks bad on the jail.

.

Looks like the Letcher Fiscal Court has set a new record for stupid. Do they really think that funding a new recreation center is more important than anything else in the county? By the vote of the court’s majority, that recreation center loan gets paid if nothing else in the county gets funded. I think recreation is fine, but I don’t think it’s more important than water or sewer or all the other things that go on in this county. What planet are these guys from? I noted that the judge says, once the building is finished, its operation will be paid for by the users. Doesn’t he know that the Knott County Recreation Center and the Pike County Expo can’t pay their way? The Pike County Expo Center is in such bad shape they’re trying to force neighboring counties to send money to fix the problem their over-optimism got them into. And now we’re heading down the same road. I hear the Knott County judge/ executive warned our Fiscal Court and suggested some kind of sharing. Didn’t work. At the meeting, Judge Ward justified putting the center ahead of everything else by saying people had been saying for 20 years that we need recreation. Wayne Fleming made the sensible response that a person might need a new car, but it you can’t afford it, you don’t buy it. That’s the kind of common sense you need applied to this whole idea. Letcher County, we are looking at a 20- or 40- or 50-year albatross. To fund it, they’ll have to raise taxes. That will hit all of us. How do you like the idea of cutting back on heat or food so you can pay more taxes to build a big fancy recreation center?

.

You are very special to me. You mean more to me than you will ever know. Whether we are near or far, you will always have my heart. I love you and I always will. I miss you very much and can’t wait to be with you again. I can’t wait to touch you and show you I really love you. I want to wish you happy birthday on Feb. 7. I love you, baby, and I am always thinking of you. You will never be loved by anyone the way you are loved by me. I love you, Crystal, now and forever.

.

Grandpa wants to cut funds for special education. My little man was just an illiterate little redneck when in the fourth grade he was placed in special ed. By his senior year in high school he scored distinguished on all the sub tests of the CATS test. I talked to my friend’s son yesterday. My friend’s son said that he was in special ed all through school and now has a degree in computer science. My friend’s son said that people often don’t understand what special ed means to kids like him and my little redneck.

.

I wanted to let everyone on No. 3 Hill know we cannot do any target practice. We cannot shoot any guns. And it is all due to one person. I can’t say who it is, because they won’t let me. It’s not me, Karen, but it is very close to me. We can’t hunt up here anymore. We can’t hunt turkey or deer thanks to this one woman. I just wanted to let you know so you won’t get in any trouble like I did.

.

I’d like to say hello to a good old boy in Ashland. I enjoyed the phone call. I love you.

.

Well, you might not care about the mess you made of your life, but you need to start taking care of those four little kids.

.

Howdy, Brushy Bill here. want to throw my hat in the ring for President early. They were all afraid of me the last time and took my name off the ballot. You don’t have much of a choice this time either. John McCain is older than Pine Mountain, Obama is a good kid, but not tough enough or smart enough. Last and least is Sarah Palin, an air-headed cheerleader who can’t even keep her own family in check. Barney and I have come up with a 23-point plan to get America back to being great again. 1. First and foremost, prosecute all Congressmen and Senators for crimes against humanity. They’re like cancer cells, if you don’t get them all, even one will corrupt the rest. Neuter all politicians. 2. Default on the national debt. Everyone’s doing it nowadays, banks, insurance and mortgage companies, investment brokers, homeowners. It’s become quite fashionable since there are no penalties or downside. Send China a ‘thank you’ note and send back all that cheap Chinese junk. I’ll put American workers back to making quality products again. 3. End all foreign aide, especially to Israel. 4. Immediately bring our troops back from Iraq and Afghanistan, and fill the skies with predator drones forever. 5. Invade Somalia, sink all their boats, mine their harbors, bomb their shipyard, then leave. 6. Bomb the AK- 47 factory. 7. Deport all illegal Mexicans, deport all Muslims. Stock the Rio Grande River with crocodiles and piranhas. 8. Empty all prisons. Airdrop the convicts in North Korea. Fidel Castro dumped his inmates on the U. S. once and Cuba came out just fine. 9. Post a bounty on street gangs and gang bangers; $100 reward for each tattoo on the hides you bring in. 10. Issue gun owners licenses. You need a license for everything else. Marriage, hunting, fishing, driving, selling, etc. Once you establish your sanity and need or use for the gun, you get a license. All others caught with a gun will be used for target practice. 11. Legalize illegal drugs, then poison them. 12. Hack the heads off of all hackers. 13. Ban tobacco. That will end hospital overcrowding, and over half of our medical expenses. We won’t have to hold our breath when we walk out of Walmart. 14. Ban lotteries and all forms of gambling. It is a tax on the children of the poor. 15. Taser kids who park in handicapped spots. 16. Govern all cars to 55 mph. Put cameras on every stop sign and stoplight. Get cops back to crime fighting. 17. No more hunting, fishing or boating licenses. No admission cost to any parks or recreational areas. We should be rewarding such behavior, not taxing it. 18. Make golf carts and ATVs street legal if they have mufflers. That will cut down on the use of thousands of gallons of gas. Crush all Harleys without mufflers. 19. Big mansions: Anyone owning a big home with more than two unused bedrooms will have to let homeless people live there. Big homes waste more energy than any gas-guzzler, and do it 24/7. 20. Reverse the electricity consumption curve. The more electricity you use, the cheaper it gets. This is sending the wrong message, to conserve electricity. Give the little guy cheap electricity and let the big companies pay higher rates. I’ll bet you won’t see streetlights on during the daytime anymore. With Las Vegas closed, we should have extra power. 21. Ban strip mining. Put strip miners to work building roads and bridges. They have all the qualifications and we sure need it. Then put thousands of underground miners back to work. Give coal companies and truckers a tax break. Make the gas companies start paying their fair share. 22. Appoint Native Americans over the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, Park Service, TVA, etc. They did a good job for thousands of years before we got here, and we’ve wrecked the place in less than 100 years. 23. The mule is freed from the oppression of the Democratic Party’s mascot. Barney feels offended. Anyone breaking the new rules will be deported to Detroit. For regress to the old America, get out and vote for Old Brushy Bill — the last one on the bottom of the ballot. Paid for by the candidate.

.

We all know that our Social Security tax dollars pay for Social Security and the conservatives want to cut Social Security. Whose tax dollars are paying for the war?

.

Based on their votes at the special meeting recorded Friday and aired this week on the government channel, I’ve decided the only members of the Letcher County Fiscal Court with any sense are Wayne Fleming and Terry Adams. The rest of the court voted to put funding of the recreation center ahead of everything else in the county. That means road plowing, senior centers, all other recreation activities, garbage pickup, water systems, libraries, employee compensation, jail funding, helping the Sheriff ’s Department, funding fire stations, etc. And that’s only to get the building finished. That would be a bad vote at any time, but I understand that the cost of that center has gone up from $6 million to $8 million, a 33% increase already, and that may not be the last of it. So, county employees, how do you like the idea that your health insurance may take second place to building that center? Or your salaries on which you live? Seniors, how do you like the fact that your centers may have to be closed or curtailed so that the recreation center can be built? Citizens, how do you like the idea that you may have to live with snow and ice on your roads because the county can’t fund road clearing? Or that the sheriff will have to cut back on offi cers to keep you safe? Or that your garbage pickup might go to every two weeks, or the county might not be able to pay the landfill to get rid of it once they do pick it up? Or that libraries may have to close? The fiscal court signed a guarantee that paying the loan for the center takes precedence ahead of all expenditures from the general fund. And that will go on for the next 20 years.
