None of the neighbors who live on Flat Gap Road would have ever thought a certain woman would divorce her husband and turn out wild.

I’d like to thank my friend who called to comfort me about my mother. And you were right. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 said the day of the Lord will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed and exalts himself above every so-called God or object of worship and he takes his seat in the temple of God displaying himself as being God. Thank you for the correct information.

I saw on the news where State Rep. Rick Nelson from Middlesboro wanted to force food stamp recipients from being able to buy pop, candy or any kind of sweets at all with food stamps. He needed to back off. Don’t you think kids might need a pop or candy bar every now and then? If I was in his district, I think I would want to get rid of him.

I think it is great everyone praises miners and the jobs they do. Now they can mine all of the coal they want to, but until it gets into the truck and goes to the tipple it ain’t nothing but a rock. If we are going to praise the miners, we also need to praise the drivers who are hauling it and are working to make the money.

I’m just reading The Mountain Eagle here. I believe I want to go to prison for a while. The way it looks here is a good deal. They’ll let you out early, find you a place to live and get you a job. What else would you want there?

I realize that many folks will try to paint a bad picture of the Letcher County Cooperative Extension Agency. Though I’m not from Letcher County, I have several friends who keep me posted on the goings on in this community. I for one would like to express my appreciation to the Cooperative Extension Agency, especially to Shad Baker. A while back, colleagues of mine from the Sierra Club wanted to hike the Pine Mountain Trail and needed a place to bunk for a couple of days. They were a bit concerned about how some residents of Letcher County might react to their being there because of the Club’s recent publicity opposing mountaintop removal coal mining. However, Shad was more than gracious and offered them the use of the Extension Agency for the weekend at no cost. My friends had a wonderful, clean facility with hot showers and two full kitchens for their stay. Shad is a wonderful proponent of clean energy and one of the few Letcher Countians I know with a desire to save our mountains.

As a graduate of Jenkins High School in 1974 and a lifelong citizen of Jenkins, I am sick of hearing about the Cavalier painting. I drive by there every day and I don’t miss it. Furthermore, I think Don Amburgey and Terry Braddock do a lot for Jenkins. I really couldn’t believe the school system paid somebody that much money to paint that Cavalier when they pay an art teacher who has students who could have painted it as a school project. There are ways of doing it safely so that isn’t an issue.

I don’t want one penny of our county’s coal severance tax being spent on the boondoggle of adding Pikeville College — or, excuse me, ‘university’ as it’s now called — to our statefunded college system. Coal severance tax is meant for building water and sewer lines and helping to bring industry into our region, not for enriching the lives of a few bigwigs in Pikeville. If they make Pikeville a state college, then what other private college will demand to be next? The University of the Cumberlands at Williamsburg? Will Union College demand to join the state system after that. What about Campbellsville? Let’s hope Senate Leader David Williams will put an end to this nonsense fast.

I have some questions I would like to ask as a taxpayer about the extension office. How come the extension office has six vehicles, but only three agents? What is the staff turnover in the last 10 years? How come the agriculture agent will not take phone calls or will not return phone calls? Can you tell us more about the lawsuit that is apparently pending right now about a contract bid going on at the extension office? Can an agriculture agent be on the blighted and deteriorated board at Jenkins? Is 4-H only for a select few kids? Tell us more about the tax money and how much of our tax money is going to the extension office.

.

To the person couldn’t get invited to be on WMMT: All you got to do is call 633-1208 on a Friday or Wednesday afternoon and Wiley will invite you to be on the show. All you got to do is buy your own gas and he will put you on the show.

.

I’m from Red Star and I think everyone who steals telephone lines for copper should be charged with one felony count for each home that is affected by the theft of those telephone cables. Someone might need to call for emergency assistance and can’t. They should be charged with wanton endangerment instead of being charged with simple theft and let go with three years probation. I think the local court system needs to crack down harder on these criminals. These people put lives in danger when they steal lines.

.

To the man who keeps sending messages to his angel: Why don’t you just tell her? The rest of us don’t need to know. Or are you sneaking around and you do this to keep her hanging on?

I just heard on the news how public schools are failing our children. It is no wonder. All our schools think about is sports. The kids go to school all day, practice in the evenings and then have ballgames at night. When are the kids supposed to study? They also have lots of things on the weekends. It takes up their time and costs money. It comes to an extra $40 or $50 a week. People could live on the extras. Some sports is good for children, but there should be a limit. The school personnel should realize this. Maybe the parents should speak up.

.

It sounds like the extension board turnover rate is nearly as high as their staff turnover rate. Makes you wonder, can any one organization make that many bad hiring decisions?

.

I’ve got a problem and want an answer from the men out there who are getting older. When I go for a walk things get blurry. Don’t get worried. I’m not hurting anywhere. Things get blurry and I don’t get weak. What is going on? I know some of you all have had this experience. I would ask my doctor about it, but the doctor will want to run a test. I want to know the truth from men out there who have experienced this. And no, I am not smoking pot because I don’t smoke.

.

I go to church with a person who works at the extension office. Boy, we sure have heard some stories at church. It would be worth looking into.

.

Congratulations to the rock band Sleeper Agent, who are from Bowling Green and played in concert at Summit City during 2011. They have just been voted Number Two by the readers of Rolling Stone magazine in a poll of ‘Best New Artists of 2011.’ It’s amazing when you think of some of the great up and coming bands that have played in Whitesburg since Summit City opened. Interestingly, the top new band of 2011, Cage the Elephant, is also from Bowling Green. What in the world are they putting in the water in Bowling Green?

.

In your article about the county extension office you forgot to include the fact the treasurer also turned in his resignation. Maybe you should ask him why. Also, you might want to question the former board members.

(We tried to contact the board members you speak of before last week’s edition hit the press. Some had no comment. Others did not return our phone calls.)

.

We have enjoyed watching the government channel ever since it has been on, but for the last hour we have no earthly idea who these Dixon people are. It has been going on and on. How did they get on here? I thought this was the government channel, not the personal channel. Sorry if I sound like sour grapes, but I would like to see something I know and somebody I know of.

.

I wish that scum bag piece of garbage who keeps burning his garbage on Marshall’s Branch would quit. He is killing everybody on the hollow. He has choked every one of us to death.

.

The best new word I’ve heard in some time is ‘pretendster,’ which is being used to describe these would-be hipsters and frat boys who pretend to be too cool for school by drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.

.

I wish that when they decide to turn school out early they would call earlier to let the parents know. Ten minutes before school is to be turned out is not enough time. A lot of us don’t keep the radio on, and we depend on the phone call telling us what’s going on. All that I ask is that next time you let school out early, please call 30 to 45 minutes earlier so my kid will have someone wait for them. Please.

.

Does anybody remember the weapons of mass destruction? We have a candidate now who says if he is elected he will bomb Iran. The candidate came in second in Iowa. Can world problems really be solved by bombing places?

.

There are things that people don’t know about elections. Vote hauling was a scandal in eastern Kentucky but an accepted part of life in Iowa. The recent Iowa caucus was held for those people who are able to go out at 7 at night and vote. The voters consisted of those who were bused in by paid haulers and didn’t have to work that evening. Night shift workers are unable to vote in the Iowa caucus unlike a primary election. Candidates got out a select group of people to vote. People who were unable to get a ride at 7 p.m. were left out. There is nothing against expense money for voters in Iowa although in eastern Kentucky we call that vote buying.
